Education Projects
With this project, Nepal Tea Foundation will focus on the core impediment to any nation’s growth – illiteracy. Nepal has an estimate population of 30 million and only about 39%of the total population is literate. There is also a wide variation among the literacy rates of the male and that of the females. According to the Central bureau of Statistics (CBS) Nepal, the literacy rate of the females is only about 25% while it is about 54% for the male population.
As of May 2020, we have awarded 2400 scholarship for children of underprivileged tea farmers in Panchthar, Nepal through our legacy organizations. We have 93 students who are currently part of our 2019 cohort. The Nepal Tea Foundation scholarships cover all tuition, books and any academic expenses for Primary (Grade 1-5), Lower Secondary (6-8) and Higher Secondary (9- 10) education.
We built a school!
In 2018, Nepal Tea Foundation in collaboration with a couple of generous donors - Annabel Kalmar and Tracy Mahr – managed to fund raise over $10,000 to construct a school. The fund and the subsequent school will provide education to 30 primary school children from 12 families (soon to be 20 families) in Nanglapha, Panchthar District, Nepal. The homes of these families are located at a 2,000 m altitude; the children walk 1-2 hours every day to commute to their current school. .The new school will consist of three rooms and a kitchen made from bamboo and covered on top with a polycarbonate roof.
